A musty smell is one of the most common problems we see in Barbour and other premium wax jackets. The cause is usually trapped moisture between the cotton outer fabric and the lining, which can lead to mildew developing over time.

Our specialist cleaning process removes dirt, odours and mildew from both the inside and outside of the jacket using cleaning products developed specifically for waxed cotton. Once cleaned, we professionally rewax the jacket to restore its weather protection.

If your jacket smells musty, don't put it in the washing machine or take it to a conventional dry cleaner. Professional cleaning is the safest way to restore it.

Rewaxing, sometimes referred to as reproofing, is the process of applying a fresh protective wax finish to your jacket.

Over time, normal wear and professional cleaning gradually remove part of the original wax layer. Rewaxing restores the jacket's water resistance, wind protection and characteristic appearance while significantly extending its lifespan.

There are several clear signs. Your jacket may feel dry to the touch. You may notice lighter patches where the wax has worn away. Water may no longer bead on the surface. If you're unsure, simply send us a photograph via WhatsApp or email and we'll be happy to advise you.

For many Barbour jackets, we're able to identify the original fabric using the production code inside the garment, allowing us to use matching materials wherever possible for an authentic repair.

Alterations involve changing the fit of your jacket. Examples include shortening sleeves, adjusting the body width or making other tailoring modifications to improve comfort and fit.

Once your jacket arrives, we carefully inspect it and confirm receipt. We'll then schedule the work and keep you informed throughout the process. When the work has been completed, we'll send you an invoice. As soon as payment has been received, your jacket will be returned by DHL, fully insured and trackable.

No,  — never. A wax jacket should never be machine washed. Doing so permanently removes the protective wax finish and can damage the cotton fabric itself, making it extremely difficult to restore the jacket to its original performance.

Professional cleaning by a specialist workshop is always the safest option. 

Most retailers selling wax jackets also offer rewaxing products, such as wax sprays, tins or wax bars. While these products can certainly help with minor touch-ups, achieving a professional result requires far more than simply applying more wax.

A wax spray only coats the surface of the fabric. It may improve the appearance for a short time, but it doesn't properly restore the protective wax finish or allow the wax to penetrate the cotton as intended. It's a temporary fix rather than a long-term solution.

When using a tin of wax, the temperature of the wax is crucial. It must be heated correctly and applied evenly using the proper technique. If too much wax is applied, the jacket can become sticky and patchy. Too little wax leaves the fabric unprotected, while incorrect application can even allow wax to soak through into the lining.

Wax bars are useful for treating small scuffs or worn areas, but they're not designed to rewax an entire jacket.

Professional rewaxing is about much more than adding a new layer of wax. It's a skilled process that restores your jacket's protection while preserving its appearance, comfort and breathability.

In many cases, small holes and tears are caused by a jacket becoming too dry. Once the protective wax layer has worn away, the cotton fabric becomes more vulnerable to wear and damage.
